Bats actively track and prey on grape pest populations

چکیده
Abstract There is growing evidence about the role of insectivorous bats against agricultural pests in various crops. Nevertheless, little research addressed aggregational and functional responses bat assemblages to changes pest availability across a spatio-temporal scale. Therefore, we examined activity diet habits different species using DNA metabarcoding by simultaneously monitoring relative abundance two major (the European grapevine moth, Lobesia botrana, leaf rolling tortrix, Sparganothis pilleriana) through grape season, vineyard region Iberian Peninsula. During irruptions, found highest levels frequencies bats, although not all contributed equally suppression. Bats foraging guilds positively responded abundances, indicating distinct may synergistically play at suppressing broad scales aerospace. For instance, narrow space foragers exploiting irruptions interior, edge hampering dispersion local scale, open preventing infestations new patches broader scales. Yet, our study exposed current methodological constraints regarding dynamics, acoustic bats’ or unfeasibility reliably quantify prey diet, thus further improvement these issues required order gain insight on agroecological interactions between pests.

Bats Track and Exploit Changes in Insect Pest Populations
The role of bats or any generalist predator in suppressing prey populations depends on the predator's ability to track and exploit available prey. Using a qPCR fecal DNA assay, we document significant association between numbers of Brazilian free-tailed bats (Tadarida brasiliensis) consuming corn earworm (CEW) moths (Helicoverpa zea) and seasonal fluctuations in CEW populations. This result is ...
متن کاملEcholocation and pursuit of prey by bats.
Echolocating bats use different information-gathering strategies for hunting prey in open, uncluttered environments, in relatively open environments with some obstacles, and in densely cluttered environments. These situations differ in the extent to which individual targets such as flying insects can be detected as isolated objects or must be separated perceptually from backgrounds. Echolocatin...
متن کاملOptimal control problem on insect pest populations
In this article we present a model of insect infestation of grape vines and consider the optimal control of the pest through the use of egg pesticides. We show existence and uniqueness and present the results of some numerical simulations.
متن کاملIncreasing evidence that bats actively forage at wind turbines
Although the ultimate causes of high bat fatalities at wind farms are not well understood, several lines of evidence suggest that bats are attracted to wind turbines. One hypothesis is that bats would be attracted to turbines as a foraging resource if the insects that bats prey upon are commonly present on and around the turbine towers. To investigate the role that foraging activity may play in...
متن کاملInfluence of herbicide tolerant soybean production systems on insect pest populations and pest-induced crop damage.
Conventional soybean weed management and transgenic herbicide-tolerant management were examined to assess their effects on soybean insect pest populations in south Georgia in 1997 and 1998. Soybean variety had very little impact on the insect species observed, except that maturity group effects were observed for stink bug, primarily Nezara viridula (L.), population densities on some sampling da...
